Elementary 2

Grades 6 - 8

Learners are engaged and at the centre of their learning and outcomes. Assessment is collaborative and slowly scaffolds to more traditional approaches towards those commonly used in secondary institutions, leaving learners to feel confident to navigate what comes next after their experience at CMCS. Students are met with curiosity, and emergent ideas are embraced, being reflected in the areas of study, including English language arts, mathematics, science, geography and history, the arts, social justice, and field studies.

The E2 learning community is all about supporting learners as they develop sophisticated abstractions of academic content, becoming studious, independent, and responsible learners who have a keen sense of social justice and a connection to nature—balancing freedom with responsibility. Learners are nurtured and challenged to grow holistically, not only academically but also as engaged citizens with agency. Academic lectures are augmented with hands-on learning experiences and collaborative opportunities. Rigorous academics are supported through an individualized approach offering tutorial-style support from the educator. E2 balances independent student-led learning with educator-guided instructional practices.

The Field Studies program intends to empower learners to develop a love of nature and to start noticing the interconnectedness of all living things. As students develop and age, they often take on nurturing and leadership roles with the younger members of our community, mentoring those who are travelling the path in which they have walked.

While many learners enter E2 through being a part of CMCS, those who arrive from other schools discover, embrace, support, and have the space to flourish holistically as they join our community.

"The children of today will make all the discoveries of tomorrow. All the discoveries of mankind will be known to them and they will improve what has been done and make fresh discoveries. They must make all the improvements in houses, cities, communication, methods of production, etc. that are to be made. The future generation must not only know how to do what we can teach them, they must be able to go a step further."

Whole School Study

Each year, the learning community at CMCS selects an area of study that helps guide our learning. This culminates in an Open House during the second week of March, during which our current families and the greater community can come and explore what we have learned! The 2023/2024 Whole School Study is Space and the Solar System. Have a peek at the E2 Learning Community set-up for the big day!
